Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, known as Te Papa, was established in 1998 as New Zealand’s national museum. Bold, innovative and interactive, Te Papa remains at the forefront of global museum practice. At its heart is the partnership between the indigenous Māori people and Pākehā, or non-Māori New Zealanders. It is a multi-disciplinary museum combining science, art and history, and has special strengths in Māori and Pacific taonga (treasures).

In a country of only five million people, Te Papa receives more than a million visitors a year. It is one of New Zealand’s leading tourist attractions, and has often been named among the world’s top museums. As part of its role as a national museum, Te Papa supports and provides services to the wider museum and cultural sector in Aotearoa.
