Build skills in crisis leadership with Deakin University

Anticipating and responding to complex situations is a fundamental aspect of leadership today. The field of crisis leadership aims to provide useful frameworks, models, and strategies for navigating these kinds of situations.

On this five-week course from Deakin University, you’ll gain an introduction to the key principles and applications of crisis management.

Equipping you with key skills and strategies in each week, the course will culminate with the drafting of a full Crisis Management Plan. This will be yours to take away and implement in your own organisation.

Apply crisis leadership concepts to your own organisation and context

Providing an overview of crisis management in a variety of contexts, this microcredential is designed to be applicable to a wide range of sectors and industries.

Whether you work in the corporate sphere, public health, finance, education, or any other area, you’ll be encouraged to apply your learning to your own organisation or context.

You’ll meet and interact with professionals in other industries who’ll share their varying experiences of crises and complex situations.

Reflect on your role in leading and managing crises

Throughout the course, you’ll gain an awareness of the importance of self-reflection and self-knowledge in enabling leaders to navigate and learn in stressful and complex situations.

A key priority of the microcredential is to encourage you to reflect on your own role in managing and mitigating crises. The course will equip you with core skills and strategy, but it will be your own critical thinking process that elevates you from a crisis responder to a crisis leader.

Develop a crisis management plan that you can take away and implement

In the final week of the course, you’ll develop a crisis management plan that you can take away and implement in your own organisation.

This will help you build preparedness and ensure that your organisation can weather any crisis.

How will this microcredential help in my career?

This microcredential is firmly focused on providing skills and frameworks for you to use in your career. You’ll be encouraged to discuss your own experiences of managing crises, and to apply what you learn in the context of your own organisation and profession. This will mean you take away concrete learnings and skills to boost your career.

At the end of the programme, you’ll receive a certificate to demonstrate your skills to future employers.

How will I be assessed?

This microcredential culminates in a two-part assessment designed to assess your personal leadership style and your ability to develop a usable crisis management action plan.

In Part A of the assessment, you’ll use a provided survey or leadership measure to assess your key behavioural tendencies and skills that may be relevant to dealing with crisis situations. These tendencies include charisma, regulatory focus, reflexivity, resilience, and empathy.

In Part B of the assessment, you’ll be expected to produce a detailed crisis management action, setting out some key implementable actions for crisis management in a context of your choice.

Will I receive university credits?

Upon successful completion of the written assessment, you’ll be awarded 0.5 Postgraduate Level Credits from Deakin University, and a Credly digital badge. You can build up your credits by completing more microcredentials offered by Deakin University.
