Examine key definitions related to CAAFAG
Thousands of girls and boys continue to be recruited and used in conflicts worldwide. While progress has been made in some areas, challenges are still faced in designing and implementing programmes to prevent and respond to the needs of CAAFAG.
This six-week course from the Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action will introduce the key concepts of programme design for CAAFAG and contextualise your design within the legal and normative framework.
Explore each step of the project cycle
Guided through the five steps of the project cycle, you’ll learn to meet requirements set out in the CAAFAG programme development guidelines.
You’ll examine background information, context analysis, programme design and strategic planning, implementation and monitoring, and learning and evaluation, and discover how to implement each step.
Design programmes for prevention, release, and reintegration
On this course, you’ll learn how to develop gender sensitive, context specific programmes that incorporate the perspectives of CAAFAG.
You’ll explore programme design for the prevention of recruitment, the facilitation of release and identification, and the promotion of reintegration.
This unique focus will equip you with the skills to create effective programmes and evaluate and adapt future designs.
Improve your project implementation skills
Project implementation not only includes programme design, but broader considerations including budgeting, human resource management, and child safeguarding.
You’ll be introduced to a range of implementation and monitoring strategies to ensure all activities, data, and participants are treated with respect and meet professional guidelines and finish this course having enhanced your knowledge of programme design within the context of CAAFAG.
Syllabus
Week 1
Understand the basics of CAAFAG and the legal and normative framework
Introduction
In this course we will learn how to design and implement quality programmes for CAAFAG. It is structured around the 5 steps of the project cycle.
Who are CAAFAG?
In this activity, you will learn key definitions related to CAAFAG, pathways to association as well as the risk factors of recruitment.
Legal and normative framework
In this activity, you will learn the basics of International Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law, International Criminal Law, and International Counter Terrorism Law. You will also learn about the normative framework.
Application of the legal framework
In this activity, you will learn about the application of the legal framework at international level and national level as well.
Week 2
Discover the process to implement a context analysis
Welcome to Week 2: Context analysis
Welcome to Week 2! Let’s learn about the context analysis, the second step of the project cycle.
Phase 2 - Getting ready
In this activity, you will learn the key elements to develop a data collection plan, to contextualise the tools, to set up a referral pathway and the training required for data enumerators.
Phase 3 - Implementation
In this activity, you will learn tips for data collection, basic elements of data coding and key considerations of data analysis.
Week 3
Learn how to design programmes for CAAFAG (part 1)
Welcome to Week 3: Programme design
Welcome to Week 3! Let’s learn about programme design, the third step of the project cycle. This step will be covered in Weeks 3 and 4, with a focus on prevention and release program design during Week 3, and on reintegration.
Programme design methodology
By the end of this activity, you will be able to describe how to use the results of context analysis to programme design.
Prevention programme design
By the end of this activity, learners will be better able to explain how to apply programme design methodology to develop prevention of recruitment and use programmes.
Release programmes design
In this activity, you will learn how to apply programme design methodology to develop programmes that facilitate release.
Week 4
Learn how to design programmes for CAAFAG (part 2)
Welcome to Week 4 – Programme design and strategic planning
Let’s learn about programme design and strategic planning, the third step of the project cycle. We have partly covered this step in Week 3, and this week we will focus on reintegration program design and monitoring, HR and budget.
Reintegration programme design
By the end of this activity, you will be able to explain how to apply programme design methodology to develop reintegration of CAAFAG programmes.
Monitoring
Monitoring is a key component of project design. The development of a logframe, including indicators and means of verification will be essential to measure progress against outputs and outcomes indicators.
Human Resources
By the end of this activity, learners will be better able to recall how to identify scale and staffing requirements to implement a CAAFAG programme.
Budget
By the end of this activity, learners will be better able to list the key considerations that guide the development of budget for a CAAFAG project.
Week 5
Learn key considerations in programme implementation and monitoring
Welcome to Week 5 – Programme implementation and monitoring
Let’s learn about the 4th step of the project cycle. The implementation and monitoring phase aims at implementing a project for CAAFAG and conducting regular monitoring, taking into consideration the perspectives of children.
Child safeguarding
By the end of this activity, you will be able to describe the key elements of child safeguarding to implement a project with CAAFAG.
Data Protection
By the end of this activity, you will be able to describe the procedure to protect data and consider key elements of data protection for your context.
Monitoring
Monitoring is a continuing function that uses systematic collection of data on specified indicators to provide indications of the extent of progress, achievement of objectives and progress in the use of allocated funds.
Week 6
Understand HR, learning and evaluation
Welcome to Week 6 – Human resources, Coordination, Learning and Development
Let’s learn about human resource management, programme coordination, and Learning and Evaluation, the 5th and last step of the project cycle.
Human Resources
By the end of this activity, learners will be able to describe the key elements of quality human resource management.
Coordination
By the end of this activity, you will be able to recall key elements of coordination.
Learning
By the end of this activity, you will be able to describe the importance and key elements of learning in CAAFAG programming.
Evaluation
By the end of this activity, learners will be able to describe key elements of evaluation.

This course is designed for child protection managers or advisors in charge of designing, implementing, reviewing, and supporting programmes for CAAFAG.
